NCBI Trace database to be retired in June 2022. Data available in SRA.

The Trace Archive at NCBI will be retired as of June 17, 2022. You may continue to retrieve Trace Archive content by searching the Sequence Read Archive (SRA) using TI number, organism, or center name at the time of retirement.

Sequencing technology has matured over the past decade, and Next Generation, high throughput sequencing is now the standard for sequencing centers, large and small. The quality of high throughput reads has improved due to increased volume and read length, leading to a more accessible and impactful market. NCBI’s Sequence Read Archive (SRA) has become the world’s most popular high throughput sequencing archive, effectively replacing Trace Archive, since SRA is designed especially for housing and managing this type of data. Based on a modern, scalable infrastructure, SRA is also available to those who need powerful and flexible solutions for storage and computing. See our previous post for details. The Trace Archive played an important role in the development of the sequencing landscape, but SRA represents the future of this evolving, cutting-edge market.

If you are still producing capillary sequencing data, you may continue to submit data for publication using the SRA Submission Portal. Please contact us at with any comments or concerns.
